Cricket's the winner because of sporting Dave
Dave Banks
Dave Banks

A THRILLER of a match between HCS Embley Park and Totton & Eling ended with an equally inspiring piece of sportsmanship.

With three runs needed off the final ball, HCS seemed to have lost as their batman appeared to have been run out going for a second run which would have produced a tie.

Then up stepped bowler Dave Banks to inform the umpire that he had accidentally knocked off the bails with his arm before completing the run out - so the match did end in a tie - cricket being the winner.

It was a game that had everything and is what The Border League is all about.

Two friendly sides both wanted to win but every minute was played in the spirit of cricket'.

An unfamiliar youthful Totton & Eling side batted first - three under-13s and two under-15s donning the whites.

Banks (28) and Richard Kenway (15) got their side off to a rapid start as the ball zipped about on the all-weather wicket.

Greg Lewis (4-29) was doing all sorts as runs quickly came and wickets quickly fell.

Chris Jewell (2-24) and R Pearce (3-14) mopped up the tail but not before Jamie Winters (18) and 23 extras took their final score to 108 all out.

It was a good effort by HCS as they were several short in the field.

Then HCS openers J Hunt (30) and Tim Darby (20) gave them a good start against hostile and accurate bowling.

Thirteen-year-old B Jaberchel (1-21) had them ducking and diving with his pacy deliveries.

Banks (2-26) slowed the rate down and two wickets fell to skied catches in the deep, perfectly held by the two young fielders.

Tension mounted as S Rowlandson (39no) kept the score moving. Nine runs were required off the final over and then three to win off that final, dramatic ball.
