Bumper turn out for Andover Triathlon
 |
| Elizabeth Hutson won the female adult section |
ALMOST 250 competitors tackle the fourth annual Andover Triathlons, held in the glorious surroundings of Farleigh School and hosted by Andover Triathlon Club.
The club held an adult triathlon in the morning, which involved a 440m swim, a 30k bike and an 8k run, taking in the sights of Danebury Ring, Stockbridge and the Clatfords along the way.
Later in the day the club then hosted two events for junior athletes. First was the junior event for 8-12 year olds, which involved an 88m swim, a 2.5k bike and a run of approximately 800m.
This was followed by a youth event for 13-16 year olds and involved a 220m swim, a 5k cycle and a 1600m run.
Athletes travelled from far and wide to compete, in addition to many more who are local to the Andover area. Many were repeat entrants however, for many this was either their first experience of a triathlon or their first time taking part in the event.
The weather was kind to all throughout the day being overcast and warm, without being too hot and the event was highly praised in terms of its organisation, good value and its warm and friendly atmosphere by many involved. All competitors went away with goody bags in addition to prizes for some.
The adult male race was won by Darren Treadaway from Shorter/Rockford Club in 1.24.29, closely followed by last year's winner Ian White from Farnham Tri club. Third place went to Chris Birtch.
The adult ladies' race was won by Elizabeth Hutson in 1.37.17. Louise Bardsley from TVT club followed in second place in 1.38.20 and third position went to Alice Evans.
The junior boys' race was won by Harry Leleu (tristar 2) in 10.57 and second and third spots went to Matthew Fratesi (tristar 1) and Nicholas Goodwin (tristar 2).
The junior girl's race was won by Katie Metalli in 11.51. Second position went to Beth Fratesi and Megan Lewis took third - (all tristar 2 athletes).
The male youth race was won by Simon Davies in 19.45 and second place went to Barnaby Kempster (tristar 3) and third position to Freddie Searight (youth). Finally the female youth race was won by Emilie Stevens in 21.31 with Hannah Merritt and Grace Upton taking second and third. (all youths).
Notable performances from local athletes included sixth position for ex-club member Robert Herring and 12th position for Shaun Green who is the club's swim coach in the adult male race. Claire Fraser finished in fifth position in the ladies' race and local couple Alice and Jonathan Evans finished third and 31st in the adult races in addition to having three children competing.
Local teacher Jodie Williams finished 18th in the ladies' race and Cath Haines from Andover Tri club came home in 21st.
In the junior events Andover swim club's Nick Cannon posted the second fastest swim split and local sportsman Ben Reed posted the third fastest run overall; both athletes being in the lower junior age category (tristars 1).
Longparish School were well represented, having 19 athletes competing and Matthieu Rident and Hannah Ffolkes were the best placed athletes from the school.
In the youth event Grace Upton and Codi Briley, both of whose parents are members of the club, also competed well and put in good performances.
The club would like to thank Farleigh School, Burlison Photography and all the sponsors of the event in addition to everyone who was involved in the organisation and marshalling of the races, as without their help the event could not happen and would not have been so well received.
In addition they would like to congratulate all competitors for their efforts on the day.
