| Appleshaw School Fete: Soldiers from 3 Divison Bulford with Greg Pagett, James Coward and Aaran Dunham. |
WITH summer here the village fete season is at its height.
Among villages putting out the bunting at the weekend were Hurstbourne Tarrant, Amport and Appleshaw.
At Amport the emphasis was very much on things medieval with a visit by Richard of Wessex', one of England's top longbowmen with over 30 years' experience with the bow.
He was keen to share his skill and interest at the fete and encouraged visitors to have a go with the weapon that won the Battle of Agincourt.
Other attractions included wheelbarrow jousting, a traditional sweet stall and a tea tent with a medieval twist.
Children were encouraged to get into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up in medieval costume and taking part in a fancy dress competition.
Deep in the countryside the annual Hurstbourne Tarrant Flower Show provided a very traditional event with a marquee full of flowers, vegetables and produce.
Other attractions included a scarecrow competition, children's races, lots of stalls and a gun dog display on the playing fields behind the school.
At Appleshaw the fete organised by the school PTA raised enough money to take all the children on a free educational trip in September.
"We were lucky with the weather and we had a very generous donation by Parker and Randall, who are just down the road and gave us the sausages and burgers for the barbecue," said PTA chairman Derek Dunham.
