Historic first for Civic Service
TEST Valley's annual Civic Service made history on Sunday when it was held at the Bridge Street Methodist Church, Andover, for the first time.
The venue for the service is chosen by the newly-appointed mayor and this year it was the choice of Cllr Brian Page.
The service was conducted by Rev David R Hall, and attended by Sir George Young MP, represenatives of parish, county and borough councils and officers, the Defence Equipment and Supplies Andover, emergency services, the media, businesses and trade unions, schools and Andover College and the scouts and guides.
The first reading was by Test Valley Borough Council chief executive Roger Tetstall, followed by Rosemary Hall's solo performance of More Than Wonderful. The mayor read the second reading before the sermon by mayor's chaplain Rev Colin James.
His theme was the importance of service to others, highlighted by a quip from the great composer and multi-talented musician Leonard Bernstein who, when asked which was the most difficult instrument to play, replied: Second fiddle. But without that second instrument there is no harmony'.
Afterwards there was a reception in the council chamber of the Guildhall.
This year's mayoral charities are The Countess of Brecknock Hospice, Romsey Opportunity Group and Andover Shopmobility.
