Proud pupils don gowns for junior graduation
THE very first junior graduation event in Andover took place on at The Lights, next door to Andover College.
Year six pupils will be putting on their caps and gowns to receive a certificate to recognise their achievements from the vice-chancellor of Winchester University, along with encouragement to go on to a local university in the future.
Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Councillor Ian Carr said: "The council has been delighted to work on this celebration of the pupils' achievements with the university and with Knight's Enham and Portway Junior Schools.
"We believe that every young person should be able to do their very best throughout their lives.
"For many that could mean continuing to learn new things; full-time or part-time alongside a job after leaving school."
Anne Hughes, headteacher at Knight's Enham says: "This is a brilliant idea.
"It's a great way encourage pupils at a critical time, as they move from junior to senior school.
"I think it's something that they, and their parents, will look back at with great pride.
"Certainly they have all been very excited and are getting a taste of what university can offer them."
The 140 pupils looked the part with graduation gowns and mortar boards.
They each received a photograph with their head teacher as a lasting memento of their time at junior school.
