Disability squad are pipped in county final
HAMPSHIRE went down by two wickets in their disability county championship final against Cheshire at Walmley Cricket Club, Birmingham.
After a delayed start because of rain, the Hampshire openers put on 90 in quick time. Ian Rogers was then trapped leg before for 26 but opening partner Gavin Randall went on to make 81 before being bowled.
The remaining batsmen struggled with the conditions and Hampshire were all out for 142 in their 40 overs.
After lunch, Cheshire were greeted by improving conditions and they benefited from an opening stand of 63.
Skipper Martin Turvey regularly changed his bowlers and Rob Wallace and Randall proved difficult to score off.
Accurate spells from Dan West, Jamie Legg, Hugo Hammond and Paul Massey brought regular wickets, coupled with three good catches in the deep from West and Randall.
Excellent ground fielding made things tense and the game was finely balanced with Cheshire at 117-7.
Then one of the tailenders scored a quick 20, so Cheshire needed just six to win off the final four overs.
Wallace took a wicket to make it 137-8 and three of the last four overs were maidens, leaving five runs to be scored off the final six balls, bowled by Hammond.
A boundary helped Cheshire to victory.
Hampshire: Martin Turvey (capt), Ian Rogers (wkt), Gavin Randall, Dan West, Sam Graham, Lee Jay, Hugo Hammond, Paul Massey, Jon Wallace, Rob Wallace, Jamie Legg. 12th man: Jamie Petch.
