Gray orders troops to shoot on sight
BASINGSTOKE Town manager Frank Gray wants to see his players shooting from all angles when they face Chelmsford City on Saturday.
The Camrose club have struggled to find the back of the net so far this season, scoring just three times in their first five outings.
While Gray says that his side's lack of goals is not yet a concern, he would like his players to shoot whenever they get the chance.
"We have got to be a bit more confident in ourselves when we have an opportunity to have a shot on goal," he said.
"The players seem to be a bit reluctant to have a pop at goal. I do not mind people doing that, even if it does not come off.
"I am not worried about our lack of goals. We have created chances, it's still early in the season and we have got a lot of young lads learning the game."
Having drawn their opening three fixtures, Basingstoke lost both of their games over the
bank holiday weekend and now lie 16th in the Blue Square South table.
Chelmsford City will provide the next opposition when they make the trip from Essex on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
Having been promoted as Ryman League champions at the end of last season, Chelmsford have made an unbeaten start to life at the higher level, winning three and drawing two of their opening matches.
Last weekend saw them win away at St Albans before drawing 1-1 with struggling Braintree, though Gray admits that the game will be another difficult one.
"They are all tough at the moment and Chelmsford will be no exception," he said. "They are a strong side and will not be far away at the end of the season."
Joe Dolan will return from his honeymoon in time to play, while Aiden Lewis, who suffered a blow to the head against Havant, should be fit.
Matt Warner's ankle is still a cause for concern. The full extent of the injury will not be known until the swelling has gone down and he has a scan, but the winger is expected to be out for several weeks.
Gray has no natural cover on the left flank and is considering bringing a new player in.
"We will have a look to see who is available," he said. "There are a few people we are talking to but it is about getting the right person at the right price."
Log on to the on Saturday for half-time and full-time updates from The Camrose.
