TOYS worth hundreds of pounds were destroyed by vandals who broke into a Basingstoke nursery.

Staff from Chineham Park Pre-School, in Popley, broke down in tears when they went to open up the nursery and saw the damage.

Sue Kelly, pre-school manager, said: "Broken toys were strewn all over the playground.

"Some tricycles that we were going to use in our sports day had the wheels snapped off. Benches were damaged along with plants that the children had grown.

"The people who did this had no thought or care for their actions or whom they might be hurting. It is just not fair on the children."

She said the police had been informed of the vandalism.

Fiona McArthur, of Browning Close, whose four-year-old daughter Elise attends the nursery, said: "Everyone is really upset by what happened. Some of the toys were donated by parents or bought with money raised by the pre-school.

"How do you explain what has happened to a two, three or four-year-old?"

It is thought the cost of replacing the toys could be up to £800.

Anyone who can assist the nursery by providing new toys should contact 01256 464750.

I Think this is disgusting! What freak gets a kick out of ruining kids toys?

The type of freak wondering our streets with hoods up and knife in pocket whilst the police cut down on foot patrols and anything else they can think of to get out of doing any proper work. Force these kids to join the Army I reckon. Instead of an ASBO threaten them with compulsory enlistment then either they will find a purpose in life and actually make something of themselves or just be cannon fodder, either way we all win.

This is sick. I have read about 2 or 3 other similar incidents in the past couple of months. I'll bet it's the same crowd. Never mind army. Why are punishments so useless? It's not the cost of the damage, it's the damage done to these kids seeing their toys etc. destroyed. That should be taken into considderation when sentencing is applied. Why should these vandals not spend 5yrs in prison. They deserve it!

They're too young for prison, so bring back the borstal system that youths feared most.

All the present troubles started when some smartarse decided it was too brutal for our delicate children. We are now paying the price of 'soft' liberalism at it's very worst.

Pah! Lock 'em up and throw away the key I say!

We need to be harsher. But as soon as we become harsher, the pendulum will swing the other way we'll overdo it and end up being to lenient again as the pendulum swings back.
