MPs divided on vote over ‘John Lewis’ list
A NORTH Hampshire MP voted to keep the controversial so-called John Lewis list in a vote on politicians' expenses.
James Arbuthnot, MP for North East Hampshire, was among 172 MPs of all parties who opted to retain the additional cost allowance and rejected reforms proposed by a parliamentary committee which would have ditched the benefit.
The perk allows MPs to claim up to £24,000 each a year for household items for their second homes in London, used while they are at the House of Commons.
The list covers items such as televisions, furniture, food and refurbishments. The review of expenses was prompted by the row about MP Derek Conway's payments to his son.
Mr Arbuthnot was not available for comment because he was abroad on duties connected with his role in the Defence Select Committee.
However, fellow Conservative and MP for North West Hampshire Sir George Young voted for the changes.
Sir George, chairman of the Commons standards and privileges committee, said: "I'm disappointed with the way the vote went because MPs should be open and transparent like the rest of the world."
Figures for spending on additional cost allowances show Mr Arbuthnot and Sir George both spent £22,110 between 2006 and 2007 while Basingstoke MP Maria Miller spent £22,080 in the same period.
The review of the allowances had recommended a halt to the furnishings allowance, a full external audit of expenses, all claims to be strictly receipted and a cap on overnight and daily allowances.
Mrs Miller was among more than half of the 646 MPs who snubbed the vote.
She said she did not take part because she felt it should be up to an outside body to decide on expenses rather than MPs.
She added: "The issue of expenses should be dealt with by an outside and independent organisation.
"To have it determined by MPs is outdated and in need of fundamental reform."
Mrs Miller also abstained from voting on the pay increase for MPs for the same reason.
Mr Arbuthnot voted for a pay rise of 4.55 per cent while Sir George voted against it.
MPs, who are paid £61,181 a year, finally settled for a pay rise of 2.25 per cent for this year, which is below the rate of inflation.

'Pigs' and 'trough' spring to mind once again!
While everyone is cutting back these greedy, trusted, elected people are taking the pi*s once again.
Have they no conscience or morals to speak of? We condemn benefit fraudsters, but this is legalised theft!
Our local councillors are tarred with the same brush. It must be 'rule one' in the politicians book of rules: 'get all you can, while you can, and ignore the gullible voters!'
It's a scandal....

well at least I know what my MP thinks, shame that Miller MP snubbed the vote, shows what she wants then, its amazing that these people think we're all so dim, from Mp's to councillors they all seem to be skimming the system, Horace and his mileage, HCC and their 141k on bottled water, £9k on kitchenettes at HCC HQ.
People should be giving basic expensives back, but this just takes p*iss!

You two above seriously need to get out more. We have stories on this site day in day out on attacks / accidents / real life stories and all that you ever comment on is councillors and their expenses - listen up...no-one cares. If you are that strongly about it stand as an independant, make yourself known and make some waves and change things, but please god change the record!!!!

the idea of having a comment section on a story is so people can leave their view right or wrong, I personally dont leave messages about accidents, attacks or personal tradity on the basis that I was at the scene of the situation and I dont want to offend the families, I have the right to say my bit and happy to post it under my real name.

I think it's very important about how much of our money the elected masses are fleecing from us.
If you don't care about how they spend your money then you must have too much money to worry about.
Most of us would like to see our money spent wisely and carefully, not frittered away on expensive second and third houses and all the furnishings, etc, etc.........

Then do something about it. It sounds so drivel like on here. Your own audience is your own!! Stand for election - stand for what you think we all believe in - become an independant and then lets see!!

I think about doing that all the time, but I don't. Every time I tell myself that someday I will get in there and show them how it's done. Perhaps one day I will. I hope I will.
