REVIEW: Cats at The Mayflower
THE storyline doesn't matter overmuch in my favourite Andrew Lloyd Webber stage musical.
All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the cast of Jellicle Cats on their biggest night of the year.
They come in all shapes and sizes, with vastly differing characters - and they're all larger than life.
The magic of the songs and dances is timeless and familiar to most of us.
Nevertheless, I had the feeling that the performers were just going through the motions in the first half of the show, good though they were.
So it needed a little more sparkle after the interval and the revival was led by stand-in-for-the-night Nic Ineson.
He was called up to replace Trevor Schoonraad as Mistoffelees, the conjuring cat. Aptly, he gave a magical interpretation and his fouttés round the stage would have made even Wayne Sleep envious.
Grizabella, the role made famous by Elaine Paige, was played by Australian Chrissie Hammond, whose powerful voice had the required gravity for Memory, a song that can make or break the entire peformance.
Fortunately, it was the former.
