NEIL DUNCAN on the Basingstoke Live Fringe, The Great Western
 |
| Trissy, vocalist with Tainted Grace, by Neil Duncan |
IT hadn't stopped raining all day and I was held up in traffic and so reached the venue late - however, as I stepped in the door, I realised that I had really 'arrived' in more ways than one.
The first band were on stage and ready to play, but soundman Jon Rockbitch would not let the show start until I was there! A round of applause and an '..about time!' greeted me and then it started.
Flyin' Ike from Guildford were up first, still fairly fresh on the scene whilst breaking in a new bass-player. They were on fine form with their 'cherry-core' music (experimental metal/hard-core to the rest of us). The use of dual male/female vocals really does accentuate the melodic/harsh contrast in their delivery. Amazing start to the evening.
Next up were Basingstoke's very own Signs of Insanity, the kings of ska-punk lunacy. They were as ever 'in the zone' and delighted the crowd that had braved the appalling weather to see them play, (there were a number of other live shows on in town too). Tightly packed on stage, they accidentially demolished the drum kit half way through the set, much to everyone's amusement. It didn't take long to re-assemble it and they were off again, this time spilling out into the crowd. Another excellent performance.
The headline band were Tainted Grace from Fleet, who I have never seen before, but Trissy, the very tall female singer with long blond hair grabbed most of the (guys') attention before they even started. It would be difficult to pigeonhole their style, hard-rock with some metal undertones, but all in all quite mellow. I really enjoyed their set and was particularly interested in the guitarist's seven string guitar - I have seen them in the shops, but this was the first time I have ever seen one in action.
Great night, and it must have been the best of the fringe events surely?

I'm sure it was [italic]one[/italic] of the best of the Fringe events Neil, but you missed the best because you were in the wrong pub that night - you missed DyAd, Kalimoto and The Raz Brothers at the Light Lounge. The Best.
