| Pussycat Johnson, by Neil Duncan |
I HAVE got to admit that this show took me a little by surprise.
OK, so Basingstoke gigs by The Johnsons are always pretty impressive affairs, but I think this one broke a fair few records. First up from London were a delightful dirty rock and roll trio from London by the name of Black Helium. Even at this early stage there was a fair sized crowd already present and they were in for a real treat from these guys (and gal). Excellent, heavy-ish rock, plenty of audience engagement, plus some silly costumes. It certainly got the crowd going and there was even some muttering that they were going to be a hard act to follow.
By the time The Johnsons took to the stage, the place was well and truly heaving - wall to sweaty wall with people, the biggest crowd I have ever seen there.
Pussycat Johnson was on particularly good form, geed-on by the many, many friendly faces in the crowd. They gave a pretty stellar performance I would say, with loads of new numbers along with loads of old favourites. Dare I say that I even noticed a hint of slightly more heaviness creeping to the set - I can hope!
They finished with their awesome cover of Iggy Pop's I Wanna Be Your Dog - and that really was the cherry on the top of a great show.
