REVIEW: Live music at The Light Lounge
Nick, vocalist with Dr Gonzo, by Neil Duncan
Nick, vocalist with Dr Gonzo, by Neil Duncan

THE Light Lounge was even more packed than usual when I arrived, on account of this being something of an experimental 'all ages' show. The bulk of the younger clientele were there to see the first band up, coming from Tadley and called Mundane Mondays.

They have only been together a year and this was their first show, so it must have been thrilling for them to have so much support. I think their fans would have been delighted with the performance, which was very impressive for such a young band's first time out. Indie/progressive in style, but a couple of their songs showed hints of something a little more raunchy, so watch this space - style still under development. Great start.

Next up were well-known Basingstoke rockers Angelus and it's safe to say that you are in great hands with Angelus. Technically they are top shelf and play real passion and energy, so you just grab yourself a good spot near the front and settle down to excellent rock and roll. Obviously a large portion of the younger crowd had left, but there were still a fair few people there, so I hope the guys didn't feel too put out. They played a mix of older material, which I am familiar with and newer material which I am not. They also did a couple of covers, just to impress anyone who hadn't seen them before.

The headline position went to Dr Gonzo, weird rocking kings themselves. Standard operation procedure is for them to don silly costumes, which they duly did, although I think Nick quickly regretted the Michael Jackson outfit, because of the heat. A very entertaining band to watch, with a diverse mix of material and an interesting performance. They still retained a crowd, although I thought that we were missing some of the usual suspects.

From my perspective it was a very successful night and I was unaware of any problems, so perhaps the occasional 'all-ages' show in the future will help to push up attendance at live events.
