REVIEW: Live music, Railway Inn, Sunday March 30

UNABLE to catch Basingstoke band Bright White Lights in their home town, I headed down to Winchester to check on their progress.

Last time I saw them they were just a little school band, but now they have blossomed into a bona fide college band. It does seem to matter how many years I am in the business, I never get used to these young bands springing up and towering over me. They are now much tighter and have better definition to their sound.

I recognised some of the songs and they had a much more professional feel. There was also a decent crowd present to cheer them on, although movement was somewhat limited.

Next up, from Guildford were Stranger in Moscow and it has been quite a while since I last saw them. I am pleased to say that they have lost none of their power and delivered a very exciting set, with plenty of audience engagement. They were (apparently) short of some piece of equipment, but it did not adversely affect their performance.

Then all the way from Plymouth, a band with probably the worst name I have come across in a long time, Scientist the Orange Pip. It's probably a really funny 'in' joke but does the band no favours in the wider world, which is a pity because they were not a bad little art-rock band. They played a nice variety of material well and retained a sizeable crowd up front. Just change the name guys!

The headline band were from Winchester and go by the name of Caesura. They had by far the biggest crowd, only to be expected from the home team. They were of the progressive-indie camp, but did not quite match the potency of any of the earlier bands. One or two of their livelier numbers seemed much closer to the mark. Still I won't write them off, always worth while checking again, maybe not on home turf.

A very enjoyable night, for a Sunday!
