REVIEW: Basingstoke Live Fringe, Thursday, Light Lounge
 |
| Simon from The Misnomer, by Neil Duncan |
ANOTHER opportunity to sample the acts playing on one of the main stages at the weekend took place in the Light Lounge, kicking off with Johnny Virgo, a very versatile solo artist who featured on the recent 100% Reading double CD.
Tonight he was accompanied by Leo King on guitar and the pair of them opened up the night very nicely. I felt that the reggae style numbers were the most effective myself.
They were followed by the Basingstoke band formerly known as The Misnomer, and I think it was safe to say that they had probably drawn the biggest crowd of the night. They have evolved from their pop-punk roots to a more grown up rock band and their fans have grown with them. There was no doubting that they were on top form, playing very well and earning much applause and appreciation from the packed front line.
The headline slot went to another 100% Reading act, Junkyard Scientists. There of seven of them with a wide range of instruments really crowding out the stage and I was a rather surprised by how little noise they made considering how many of them there were.
I guess these guys fall into the jazz/funk category - think Jamiroquai and you'll have some idea why I was not impressed. They probably do what they do well enough, but it lacks the visceral oomph to get me going.
The night did what it was supposed to do, whetting appetites for the weekend.
