London Assurance at The Watermill, Newbury, until May 17

| Geraldine McNulty as Lady Gay Spanker |
EXQUISITELY elegant romantic comedy London Assurance continues its run at The Watermill.
Boucicault's play, which inspired Oscar Wilde, is a riotous, ridiculously funny cocktail of misunderstandings and mistaken identities, a joy from start to finish.
Ageing roué Sir Harcourt Courtly believes himself to be a fine catch for the ingénue heiress Grace, niece of his good friend Max Harkaway. The splendidly named Lady Gay Spanker recognises that the only way to stop this marriage is to flirt outrageously with Sir Harcourt distracting him from his mission. Meanwhile Grace has fallen for his son. In a maelstrom of money, madness, manners and mayhem, a duel is fought and true love conquers all.
Rising star Nikolai Foster directs. He said: "Boucicault's accessible, witty and electrifying language stands the test of time and his colourful multifaceted characters never fail to inspire, delight and intrigue.
"Our production is set very much in the period it was intended, with the occasional modern twist. I am thrilled to be working with such an accomplished, exquisitely talented group of actors on this remarkable text, and to be part of Hedda Beeby's inaugural season at the beautiful Watermill Theatre."
Tickets priced £12 - £21.50 are available from the box office on 01635 46044 or online from www. watermill.org.uk
