REVIEW: Beats n Bars, The Academy
The Author, Richard Reece
The Author, Richard Reece

BASINGSTOKE'S thriving hip hop scene took centre stage during a full night of live performances at The Academy on Saturday March 29.

In a move to showcase the town's many talented MCs, 19 year-old Richard Reece from Winklebury took the initiative and organised an open mic session dedicated to the hip hop and drum n bass scene, called Beats n Bars.

Richard, aka The Author, who has quickly established himself as one of Basingstoke's most popular hip hop artists, said: "It's so frustrating that there are so many talented people out there creating wicked tracks but not getting the chance to perform live.

"Hip hop is often mistakenly associated with aggressive lyrics and violence. I want to show Basingstoke otherwise. Our music is increasingly appealing to a wider fanbase."

Despite the wind and the rain, The Academy was packed out with performers and fans alike. The evening consisted of non-stop live hip hop with the likes of G2K, Jodie Steele, Jesta, XTC, Boiler, Koze and The KO Kid to name just a few. Drum n Bass took over at midnight and had the place jumping until 2am.

John Hicks from the Academy said: "The Academy is delighted to have hosted this event. Clearly these guys have enjoyed the chance to perform, and the good turnout demonstrates the support out there for this kind of music."

Richard added: "I'm so pleased with our debut showcase, Beats n Bars is definitely here to stay. We're now busy planning our next events including a 'junior' Beats n Bars for the under 16s. Dates will be announced on our website very soon.

"Anyone wanting to perform should contact me via on beatsnbars@live.com or visit www.myspace.com/BasingstokeBeatsnBars."
