IN A couple of months, the people of Basingstoke and Deane will be going to the polls for the local elections.
This year is set to be a particularly interesting and important contest. Not only are all 60 seats up for election but the councillors who are voted in will hold their seats for at least two years as there will be no borough council elections in 2009.
With the political control of the council on a knife-edge, the battle for votes is set to be a keenly-contested affair.
Over the coming weeks, existing and would-be councillors will be out and about – and it is on the doorstep that residents will have the best chance to ask about the burning issues that matter most to them, big and small.
The Gazette hopes that local people will take the time to ask plenty of questions, and study the views, of the various candidates. When it comes to polling day, the voters will then be in the best possible position to have their say on who they think is most suited to represent their area and, equally important, take the wider town and borough forward in a progressive and positive manner.
i hope people will listen to what is said but also read between the lines at what is not said. forget any promises they make, forget any promises they say is in the pipe line just look at the whole picture and say have they done what you feel needed doing over the last few years. i for one will not be at the box to vote this time in protest at the way our estate has been left to get run down.
