ARE you a super recycler who excels at energy-efficiency or do you know a keen composter who is always environmentally aware?

If so, we want to hear from you.

Gazette Newspapers has teamed up with local energy supplier Southern Electric to launch the Green Watch Heroes Awards.

Through the Green Watch campaign, we have profiled many people who are doing their bit to help combat climate change and boost the borough's recycling rate.

The awards now aim to officially recognise and celebrate those who are making Basingstoke and Deane a cleaner, greener place to be.

The winners will scoop an eco-goodie bag containing a selection of energy-saving gadgets, plus their own tree to plant as a permanent reminder of their win.

Green charities will also benefit, with £1,500, donated by Southern Electric, to be shared out for winners to donate to an environmental charity of their choice.

The winners will also be invited to a glittering awards dinner at Basingstoke College of Technology's Robert Newman Restaurant in April, where they will be presented with their prizes and recognised for their environmental achievements.

Throughout the entry period, we'll be profiling some of the nominees and showing why, when it comes to caring for the environment, Basingstoke and Deane is a place to be proud of.

Graham Hunt, site manager for Southern Electric in Basingstoke, said: "We're delighted to be supporting the Green Watch Heroes Awards and look forward to recognising the local people who champion the environment in their jobs, school or home.

"As a leading energy company, we are very conscious of the steps that need to be taken to become more environmentally aware. We are making lots of changes to the way we run our business and any encouragement we can give to others to do the same has to be beneficial."

Mark Jones, editor of Gazette Newspapers, said: "The Gazette's Green Watch campaign has been a great success and we are delighted to team up with Southern Electric to officially honour the green heroes in Basingstoke and Deane.

"There are many worthy winners in our community and we look forward to receiving some impressive nominations."

To enter the awards, write in, in no more than 250 words, explaining why you or your nominee is a Green Watch hero in Basingstoke and Deane and should be recognised at the awards.

The awards are open to everyone, so whether you're a family group, school, company, charity or individual, we want to hear from you.

Entries need to be sent to Green Watch reporter Eleanor Stride.

You can e-mail eleanor.stride@basingstokegazette.co.uk or send entries by post to Eleanor Stride, Gazette Newspapers, Gazette House, Pelton Road, Basingstoke, RG21 6YD.

The closing date is Friday, March 7, 2008.
